Ghana names 25-man squad to face CAR

Black Stars coach, Chris Houghton has named a 25-man contingents to face Central African Republic, for the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifier, in Kumasi-Ghana.

The national team coach of Ghana, Chris Houghton has named a 25-man contingents to face Central African Republic in the all important African Cup of Nations qualifier, set to be played in Kumasi. Ghana, after failing to beat Group E counterparts, Madagascar, face a daunting task to by all means, beat Central African Republic, to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament in Africa. After, their abysmal performance in Madagascar which led to a goalless draw, Ghanaians were left disappointed, and many have lost hope of the Black Stars making it to the AFCON.

However, Chris Houghton has named a 25-man squad to face Central African Republic. The squad is a mixture of experience as well as youth. Several notable players have been included in the squad, with many returning from injuries, and also some very notable absentees.

Medeama SC striker Jonathan Sowah has also been included in the squad, after playing a pivotal role in the club clinching the Ghana Premier League title last season. He scored 12 goals after moving from Danbort FC, during mid-season transfer window.

Players like Elisha Owusu and Baba Iddrisu, return to the team after suffering injuries during the last call-up and recovered in due time. Baba Iddrisu in particular missed out of the 2022 Mondial in Qatar. Elisha Owusu on the other hand, had not featured for the Black Stars, since the World cup back in November last year, having suffered a setback due to injury. Both players make a return to the Black Stars.

Goalkeeper, Richard Ofori also returns to the Black Stars, after missing out on a call up since September 2022, when Ghana faced, Nicaragua, in preparation for the World Cup.

Notable absentee is Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey, who is out with a groin injury. Ghana’s midfield will be missing the presence of Thomas Partey, after sustaining the injury during training for his club. The injury only means that Partey will have to be dropped for the qualifier.

One name in the squad, that has got many talking is Andre Dede Ayew, who has been without a club, since the end of last season, after English Premier League side, Nottingham Forest, alongside a host of other players. Many have questioned the validity of his inclusion, as many believe he lacks match fitness, and cannot give anything better to the team.

The 25-man squad is set to face Central African Republic on September 7, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
