Inter Miami announce signing of Barcelona captain

Sergio Busquets, the captain of Barcelona, has joined Inter Miami, reuniting him with former teammate Lionel Messi.

After 18 years with the La Liga winners, Busquets, 34, revealed in May that he would be departing the organization.

The midfielder will team up with 35-year-old Argentine striker Messi, who announced this month that he was leaving Paris St.-Germain for Inter Miami. Between 2008 and 2021, Busquets and Messi played for Barcelona for 13 seasons.

They were a part of an effective squad that captured six Copa del Reys, eight La Liga championships, and three Champions Leagues.

According to reports, former Spain midfielder Busquets, like Messi, got offers from Saudi Arabia, but he decided to join the Miami team captained by David Beckham instead.

Busquets, a former captain of Spain, appeared in 722 games overall for Barcelona, which is third most in club history.

In his 15 years with the senior squad, he contributed 40 assists and 18 goals.

Busquets joined the squad as a young player in 2005, making the jump to Barca’s B team before making his first-team debut under manager Pep Guardiola in a league match against Racing Santander in 2008.

Busquets was referred to as “one of the best players ever to represent the club” by Barcelona when they announced his intention to go from the Nou Camp.

After helping Spain win both the 2012 European Championship and the 2010 World Cup, he announced his retirement from international football in December.
