There is no Substance in Afrobeats, just vibes – Burna Boy.

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Burna Boy, has insinuated that afrobeats as a genre, is devoid of any lyrical substance or meaning, but it is just about the vibes and having a good time.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, in New York, Burna Boy known by birth as Damini Ogulu, stated that the genre is literally nothing and has no meaning. He stated that 90 percent of the Afrobeats songs have no real life experiences, which explains why most people call Afrobeats as literally nothing.

“90 percent of them have no real life experiences which is why most of Nigerian music or African music or Afrobeats as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. There is no substance to it – like nobody is talking about anything in it. It is just a great time. It’s an amazing time. But at the end of the day, life is not an amazing time. No matter how nice of a time you are having now or had at some point or plan to have, you are still going to face life.

Furthermore, he also said, “So for me, I feel like music should be the essence of the artiste. The artiste is a person who has a good day, bad days and worst days. So I’m dropping a project that should be a window for fans to see those experiences.”

In time past, Burna Boys stated that his style of music is AfroFusion and not Afrobeats. And he describes AfroFusion as a fusion of Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, Reggae, R&B, and Dancehall.
